Low-carbohydrate diets are claimed to improve your ability to concentrate. I can attest that this is true, but what that they don't tell you is that your concentration will be on chocolate cake.[1] Low-carb, low-fat, blah…eat a whole foods based diet, focusing on meats (preferably grassfed), vegetables, nuts, seeds, oils (olive, coconut, and palm), with some fruits and starchy tubers and squashes. I promise if you have weight to lose, you will lose it.[2] Low-carb does not equal no calories. Many low-carb items are high in calories.

Low-carbohydrate diets also produce ketosis. As it begins, large amounts of water will be shed, leading the dieter to think that significant weight reduction is taking place. Sugar alcohols need to be treated with caution, because while they may be slower to convert to glucose, they can be a significant source of glycemic load and can stall weight loss. Carbohydrate-containing foods such as fruit, many vegetables, bread, cereals, rice, potatoes, pasta, cakes, biscuits, sugar, milk and yogurt should be avoided. The next phase is the ongoing weight-loss phase which allows about 40g of carbohydrate a day.[21] Carbohydrate intake is limited to 20 net grams per day. The allowed foods include a liberal amount of most meats, a good bit of cheese and cream, two cups of salad, and one cup of other vegetables.[22]

Proteins in meat are the building blocks for muscle, but only if actually processed before they (loosely translated) turn into "free carbohydrate radicals", which will convert to body fat. Vegetarianism or Veganism is not healthy by any means, as we homo-sapiens are after all, omnivores.[23] Protein -- 60 percent of protein takes the carbohydrate pathway, so it can't be a protein and carbohydrate diet. It has to be a diet which has protein and fat and no carbohydrates, otherwise you don't get the automatic switch over to burning your stored fat, and that's the key to success.[24] Protein makes you feel full. Increasing the amount of protein in the diet may control appetite and make people eat less than they would normally.[25]

Subjects kept a daily nutrition diary to keep track of carbohydrate and fat consumption and adherence was also monitored by blood and urine tests. At the end of the study, the researchers found that there was weight lost among subjects in both groups and therefore no significant difference in weight loss methods.[26] Subjects received an initial session with a dietitian to explain the assigned diet program. At 12 weeks, the researchers found that the Atkins group had a lower rate of attrition (12%) compared with that of the conventional program (30%).[27]

Ketosis, a common feature of these two diets, may provide clues to the KD mechanism of action (4 ,5 ). Alternatively, evidence exists that calorie restriction suppresses seizures independent of ketosis (6 ,7 ).[33] Ketosis can lead to health problems like kidney failure.

Dieters following this low carbohydrate diet are encouraged to stick with the fourth phase diet for life, to remain healthy and avoid gaining weight. Dieters are advised to cut out all carbohydrate for the first two weeks before moving on to the second section, where a few carbohydrates are reintroduced.
